3. Treasurer – Dirk Comerford
Dirk started playing the cornet in 1974 at age 7 with Gomersal Mills Junior Band in West Yorkshire. This later became Spen Valley Brass where he played until the age of 18. He also played in concert and brass bands through the local music service. In addition, Dirk spent some time playing with a very successful American Style Marching Band, (perhaps not the height of music endeavour, but a great source of fun and discipline).
When Dirk left home to study in the North East his good intentions to join a band soon went by the wayside and it wasn’t until 10 years later, when he settled in Shropshire, that he picked up the cornet again. He started playing with Sabrina Brass in Shrewsbury and then joined Porthywaen as Dirk wanted to have the chance to compete. Dirk has mainly played cornet but had two spells on baritone and one short lived moment on the Eb horn! He is Band treasurer, acting instrument steward and also helps the new starters get going.
His sons both play in the Senior Band having worked their way up from Beginners’ Band as has he wife who started to play the Trombone when one of his sons took up the cornet. This required Dirk to learn the dark art of the trombone before he could help her learn to play it! Dirk says “It’s great being a ‘brass family’ and we love to play together especially at Christmas”.
