Oswestry Music Festival

Untitled document

The 29th Oswestry Youth Music Festival took place over the dates 2-5th March 2006

The Oswestry Youth Music Festival attracted a large number of competitors from the locality and further afield. The younger members of Porthywaen Silver Band were well represented among the competitors and winners. The full youth band won their section and were given a Distinction* grade. The photo above shows the youth band 'on stage' and the one below at a recent rehearsal.

There were also three smaller groups. Both the 25 years old and under and the 17 years old and under small groups gained a Commended* grade. The 19 and under small group gained a Distinction*. The conductor for all the groups was Carol Stokes who is resident musical director for the Porthywaen youth and training band.

Jamie Brownfield [below left] won the under 17 brass solo and Oliver James [below right] was judged as 'percussionist of the year' for his drum kit and xylophone performances. Both Jamie and Oliver gained the highest award of Outstanding*.

The festival is organised by Oswestry Town Council and they are to be congratulated on organising, yet again, a splendid showcase for the younger musicians in the area.

* The six different grades which can be awarded are shown below:

Fair - A performance limited in its communication.

Moderate -A performance showing development of technique and/or communication.

Merit -A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and/or technical ability.

Commended - A convincing performance technically and artistically.

Distinction - An excellent performance technically and artistically. Outstanding - An exceptional performance both technically and artistically.
