Very busy end of season for youth band

Untitled document

The annual summer youth concert was marked by particular special events. The family of the late Doug Lloyd presented the youth band with new music folders. Doug was a founder member of the band and the folders are a very fitting and welcome tribute to him. Carol shows one of the folders to the audience below.

Mrs B conducted the beginners' band for the last time [again!]. The beginners will be led by Oliver James and Rebecca Asquith from Septemnber 2006.

Porthywaen Youth and Training Band rounded off a successful year with three engagements over four days, under the baton of Carol Stokes. The highlight of these four days, and a piece of history for the band, was when they played at the Symphony Hall Birmingham, on 13 July 2006. The youth band were taking part in the Music for Youth National Festival with young musicians invited from all over England, Wales and the Channel Islands. A unique experience in a setting which is a little more grand than the halls the youngsters are used to playing in. Carol chose a varied programme starting with a classic march and ending with the popular Amarillo. There are no prizes or placings in the Music for Youth Festival. The band received a very positive adjudication [SEE BELOW]and a certificate which is now displayed in the Porthywaen band hall.

PENNINE WAY
SINFONIE CONCERTANTE (2ND MOVEMENT)
IS THIS THE WAY TO AMARILLO?

Rhythmic, controlled playing from the out-set with clarity in each section and solid, measured pace. Well done cornet duet ? clear and precise. The momentum grew and our feet were tapping along to this traditional march played with style and precision.

Lilting in tempo with clear, textured phrasing and lyricism. The ebb and flow of the movement was well characterised with a good feeling for the musical style. The whole band contributing to the overall sonority. The playing was consistently lyrical and shaped to the final chord.

Rhythmic, stylish playing with much to commend in terms of performance and infectious communication. (Well done kit!) The moves enhanced the playing overall with a good feel to the overall style. Good number to conclude the programme. Well done!

Two days after playing at Birmingham, the youth band played atthe Ironbridge Gorge Brass Band Festival. This festival involved brass bands from Shropshire and the West Midlands. The band played in the outdoor setting at the Maws Craft Centre, Jackfield. Proceeds from this festival went to the Severn Hospice.

TO THE LAST ENGAGEMENT OF THE SEASON

The final engagement was in blistering heat at West Felton carnival on 16 July. The band led the splendid procession on the two mile route round the village and then played on the field.
