Untitled document Porthywaen Silver Band should be upset. Over the last twelve months they’ve lost a conductor, gone down to the third section and missed out on playing at Oswestry’s Music Live. So why are they all so happy? New Chairman Gareth Johnson presided at the band’s Annual General Meeting.

Untitled document A large part of the good mood comes from knowing that they are in a strong position for the future. The Porthywaen Youth and Training Band swept the boards at the recent Oswestry Music Festival, including the prestigious Dick Jones Challenge Cup. They are also almost as busy as the senior band this year, with concerts, carnivals and church services keeping them occupied.

Likewise, the senior band is busy. They have a full program of engagements extending into next year, including a joint concert with Wrexham Brass in May and an Edwardian Concert at Powis Castle in June. New Musical Director, Mark Parry, explained that he had high hopes for the band in the coming year and hoped to continue their contesting success at Wychavon.

The band recognised two of its players and named them Bandperson of the Year. Becky Johnson was awarded the trophy for the Youth and Training Band and Aden Walker was presented the Senior Band trophy for their outstanding contribution to the band. Becky is the principal horn player of the Youth band and Aden plays Euphonium, both for the Senior and Youth bands, and is also the Band Librarian, Contest Secretary and conducts the Beginner’s Band.

Gareth Johnson, rounding off the evening, said he was proud to be Chairman. The Band has been rejuvenated by fresh leadership and a strong commitment from all of the players in both the Senior and the Youth band.
