Silver band hits gold with judges

The Porthywaen Silver Band beat off competition from 15 other bands to become Midlands Area Champions in a competition held at Bedworth, near Coventry.


The band have qualified to compete in the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in Harrogate this September as a result, giving them the chance to play alongside the nation's best after thrilling the audience with a resounding performance.

Musical Director or Porthywaen Silver Band, Mark Parry, was delighted with the efforts of band members and said: "The band were fantastic. Every player produced exactly what was required and gave a stunning performance."

There has been recent success for the Youth and Training Band too after they won the coveted Dick Jones Challenge Cup in the Oswestry Town Council Youth Music Festival, delighting musical director, Carol Jones, and showing that there is plenty of talent coming through the ranks in Oswestry and the surrounding villages.

Llanrhaedr's Jamie Brownfield wowed a packed audience with a solo on the cornet in from of a packed Methodist Church hall, with the adjudicator praising the outstanding level of performance by the band as a whole.

Band Chairman, Gareth Johnson, said: "We are extremely proud of these achievements, and it is a testament to everyone connected with the band, whose hard work is paying dividends."
