Busy and successful weekend for band

Porthywaen Youth and Training Band enjoyed a busy and successful weekend recently. Friday night was the routine rehearsal session at the band hall.On Saturday, the band entered the Chester Competitive Festival of Performing Arts held at the King's School, Chester.

The section competed in was the Brass Band Open Section. Under the baton of Carol Stokes, a programme of three pieces was performed. The traditional Westward Ho! was followed by the jazzy Sugar Blues. Jamie Brownfield featured outstandingly in this blues piece. The final item was a big band sound in the rendition of Frere Jacques Swings .

The band was complemented on its full sound, rhythmic playing and excellent dynamic range. Better still the band was awarded first prize and the top grading of ‘outstanding'. On Sunday the band played to a well-attended Songs of Praise evening at Llanyblodwell and Porthywaen Institute.The Youth and Training Band, the Beginners' Band and the starter group all rehearse on a Friday night at the band hall. The senior band rehearse on Monday nights. Tuition and instruments are provided free of charge. A unique opportunity to polish up previous musical skills or start from scratch - whatever your age.
